Very objective! I'll go for new system because you can get a compact fanless version. If it was in a rack somewhere I would use the older i3-6XXX or i5-6XXX. Security aspect might be valuable to some workloads. N100 doesn't use SMT/hyperthreading so it helps with side channel attacks. The older hardware has many vulnerabilities.

I've been experimenting with cooling my homelab in a similar way, but my wife allowed me to cut two giant holes in my door (she didn't care was her response) i have two square grilles (don't remember the name of them) one at the top and one at the bottom, as hot air rises, I have a 12v fan mounted blowing air out of the top and one sucking air in at the bottom. but I wanted to try something like this, already added one of those pwm fan controllers to my amazon basket, just need to design something to 3D print and get more fans, currently the temp inside is about 31 degrees Celsius. Also, I use the same room to store my 3D filament as its got my boiler in and my homelab so the humidity is very low, normally its around 50% in my flat but in the cupboard its been as low as 20% great for drying filament out! Love your videos keep up the great work!

Yeah still prefer my N100 machine with 16GB ram and 512GB SSD that cost me $143. now that's bang/buck. Personally I don't see the point of high performance small computers, if you want performance you'll get more performance with a regular sized machine for the same money. Small performance systems will always be limited by the cooling solution. It's different at the lower end. The form factor really suits the N100, it's just SO good. I'm happy I bought one. The SFP ports are pretty rad though, quite unexpected in such a machine. with all those cores and using a M.2 to SATA adapter it would make for a sweet file server and/or proxmox box. BUT, if I wanted to build something like this I'd just buy some 2nd hand rack server dirt cheap, as you mentioned it's too big/heavy for VESA mounting. It just looks like a really odd hodge podge mix of features, more like a machine you'd use for industrial use.

I prefer configuring Gentoo with all sort of utilities that I want to use for self-hosting, but obviously it demores a lot more of time and need certain expertise - meanwhile unRAID is automatic for this. My favorite solution, however, along with Xigmanas (despise not being for Docker, but I value how secure, robust and comfy it is).

This tutorial is underrated. I really dont like popular IOT cameras due to their vulnerability of being remotely hacked and viewed despite their convenience. While ring and their competitors also let you see whats happening when you are out and about id rather the whole system be over LAN and if I decided to broadcast the footage over WAN I would atleast know a big corp aint collecting a ton of data through their proprietary app.

@ 3:01 I'm glad you used a WP box for the connection, I'm surprised to see you using a metal cover on a plastic box, but it does fit nicely, and I'm glad you mounted the box facing down to it can drain. A lot of people mount them vertically with no drain hole at the bottom and are surprised to see the reason the camera stopped working is because the box was FULL to the top with water. Naturally, they ask "if it's a WP Box, how'd all that water get in it?", I tell them "Water, being the strongest element on the planet, is going to go wherever it was and you ain't sopping it, being WP just slows it down a little, kind of like a lock on your front door only slows down the burglar, but he will still get in. The best thing you can do is put a drain hole in the bottom so the 2nd most powerful force in nature, Gravity, can help the water find its way out. All automotive tail light and headlight fixtures have weep holes in them for the same reason."

This video singlehandedly answered all the MOST OBVIOUS questions about ZFS and RAID that, for some reason, will not come up in web searches. Very nice video. Thanks for the ideas. I would suggest moving that cable you ran along the top of your exterior wall to inside attic. Even though is is a lot easier to do it this way, exposed wires/cables can easily be snipped and then you lose that camera.

  • @colt5189

I plan to get a NAS at some point. I like the idea of having all of my data in one spot and have it run data integrity checks and save older versions of files, etc. And from the NAS you can have it periodically save backups to extra drives in the NAS and to external hard drives. I think I'd set my NAS up with like 8TB drives and have them in mirror mode where I have 3 of the drives all have the same exact data on it. So if a drive were to fail, I'd still have two copies on the NAS and not have to rush to replace the drive compared to RAID setups where you have to rush or risk data loss. And when it rebuilds, the rebuild could fail causing potential dataloss. I'd much rather run in mirror mode even them it may perform slower compared to RAID.

I loved this episode. I have done things like this for over 10 years and it makes my heart warm to know that builders are still thinking outside the BOX or Case. I loved the idea that you painted the plastic and that you found the Noctua 80 mm fans. Back in the past those 80 mm fans had the sound of an angry bee hive so you did good choosing the Noctua silent 80s. I also found the idea of JBOD since I am running out of drive letters in my home computer. The old Cooler Master modules from the classic computers cases work great for an external mount for drives but those are hard to come by. The plastic on the cheap plastic mounts probably soak up some of the drive noise also. Overall it was a great little modding tutorial for us out of the box guys.

What i am preaching for years now, repair, reuse, then recycle. Yes, a new shiny mini PC is cool and all, but can it really do more for you than a 5-10 year old NUC or Thinkstation where you might even be lucky and rescue it from the trash? We run an i5-8400T Thinkstation that we rescued from being thrown away as our homeserver running Proxmox, works great and, with two USB harddisks attached for intermediate storage, draws ~30 watts while doing its thing replacing the whole ballpark of little servers we had before.

I have a big problem with the cpu fan. I own the m715q 2nd gen since 2019 too. Since about 2 weeks I have had the problem, when I switch on the PC, the fan slowly rattles up to a very high and loud speed within a few seconds. (The blown out air is cold) The fan itself and all ventilation slots are completely free and the CPU utilization is almost constantly at 1 to 2 percent. Even if I start the PC directly into the BIOS; The fan turns up loudly within a few seconds - as described above. I've already tried all three settings for the fan in the BIOS; all without perceiving any change. As far as I know, the CPU temperature is read via the CPU; or is there a separate/built-in temperature sensor on this MiniPC that may no longer work correctly? Or should the fan itself actually not be okay? (However, there shouldn't be a control unit/board installed in the fan, right?) I would be very grateful for any tips/tricks, because at the moment it sounds like I'm sitting next to a loud engine.
